The architecture is the defining feature of the Castella Estate. Custom wood ceiling beams, Level 5 smooth walls throughout, and handcrafted detail at every turn give the home the character and warmth that the Spanish colonial style is built around. Large sliding doors in the family room and master bedroom connect the living spaces to the backyard, where the homeowners wanted enough room for their kids to play, including space for a trampoline and an area to park trailers.
Designed and built by John McDonough, with Kingdom & Co., the Castella Estate is a statement that custom home building in Las Vegas does not have to follow the styles that dominate the market.

Castella Estate: Spanish Colonial in the Desert
Las Vegas is a city where modern, contemporary, and desert contemporary architecture define the custom home landscape. The Castella Estate is something different. The homeowners came to us wanting a true Spanish colonial home, not a loose interpretation but an authentic expression of the Santa Barbara residential style that was refined in Southern California during the 1920s and 1930s.
That commitment to authenticity carried through every detail of the design. The exterior reflects the proportions, materials, and character of the era. Inside, custom wood ceiling beams and Level 5 smooth walls create the clean, handcrafted feel that sets Spanish colonial homes apart from other traditional styles. It is the kind of architecture that visitors notice immediately and the kind of project that shows what is possible when a builder is willing to work outside the styles that are most common in the valley.
Custom Detail Throughout the Castella Estate
The finishes inside the Castella Estate were selected to reinforce the authenticity of the Spanish colonial design while meeting the expectations of a modern custom home. Eight-inch-wide hardwood flooring runs throughout the main living areas, with carpet in the secondary bedrooms. Custom cabinetry is installed throughout the home. The kitchen countertops are finished in granite and quartzite, with a butcher block wood island that adds warmth and function to the space.
Level 5 smooth walls run through every room in the home. This is the highest standard of drywall finish and it produces a perfectly flat, seamless surface that shows no imperfections, seams, or texture. In a home with natural light and clean architectural lines, it makes a visible difference. The bathrooms and showers feature custom tile selected to complement the overall material palette.
The Kitchen and Family Room
The kitchen and family room are the standout spaces of the Castella Estate. The kitchen features custom cabinetry, granite and quartzite countertops, and a butcher block wood island that anchors the room. It is designed around both daily family use and entertaining.
The family room sits adjacent and opens directly to the backyard through large sliding doors. The indoor-outdoor connection gives the space a scale and openness that extends well beyond its footprint. Combined with the custom wood ceiling beams overhead, the family room is the room where the Spanish colonial character of the home is felt most strongly.
The master bedroom also features large sliding doors and lots of glass, continuing the connection between interior and exterior throughout the private spaces of the home.
12 Months From Groundbreaking to Move-In
The Castella Estate was completed in approximately 12 months from groundbreaking to final walkthrough. While the home did not present the structural challenges of a basement or hillside lot, the Spanish colonial style required careful attention to the handcrafted details that define the architecture, from the custom wood ceiling beams to the Level 5 smooth wall finish throughout. Every phase was managed to keep the project moving without compromising the quality of the finished product.

Yes. While Spanish colonial homes are uncommon in the Las Vegas valley, the style translates well to the desert climate. The Castella Estate was designed and built by John McDonough, with Kingdom & Co., to bring authentic Santa Barbara-era architecture to Centennial Hills. The home features custom wood ceiling beams, Level 5 smooth walls, and the handcrafted detail that defines the style.
Level 5 is the highest standard of drywall finish. It involves applying a skim coat of joint compound over the entire wall surface after taping and sanding, which eliminates any visible imperfections, seams, or texture. The result is a perfectly smooth, flat surface that is especially important in homes with natural light and clean architectural lines, where even minor irregularities would be visible. The Castella Estate features Level 5 smooth walls throughout the home.
