Benefits of Custom Cabinetry | Inside Kingdom & Co. Podcast

In this episode of Inside Kingdom & Co., hosts Lincoln Rogers and Zion Lovingier break down why custom kitchen cabinetry transforms a space from functional to exceptional. Learn what separates luxury built-ins from production cabinets, explore cabinet types like inset and full overlay, and discover how Kingdom & Co.’s skilled carpentry elevates design-build projects through thoughtful, artisan cabinetry.

Zion: Obviously, I think at some point in anybody’s life path, they’ve lived in a production home, a home that’s been built by a production builder, and the mindset for their cabinetry is totally different than luxury cabinetry and custom built-ins.

You know, they’re just trying to get something in there to check a box and to make the home sellable.

Lincoln: Yeah.

Zion: It’s very different than somebody who’s actually taking a lot of foresight and forethought into how is the space gonna be lived in, how are the appliances working and functioning with each other, ultimately making that as pleasant of a space to live in as possible, and also just tying everything together.

We can go through any production home and there’s gonna be a lot of filler strips, there’s gonna be a lot of gaps that aren’t necessary.

There’s gonna be a lot of things where a builder’s just gonna chintz out on because he’s trying to make a budget.

Lincoln: Yeah.

Zion: Okay, and that’s different than approaching cabinetry from a custom viewpoint.

Lincoln: Well, what’s interesting is until you know the difference, most people don’t know the difference.

Like if I brought in 100 people, most people will know this until you get to the higher end stuff and we get into the luxury stuff and then you start going, oh yeah, I know there’s a difference between an inset cabinet and a full overlay cabinet or a Euro cabinet.

And those things matter when you start getting to the custom high-end stuff because the details are so important, at least to us as a company.

Zion: For sure.

Because beauty.

Zion: Yeah, and I’ve even been in custom high-end homes where you could tell they’re just slapping something in.

Lincoln: Correct.

Zion: And there’s a difference between somebody who-

Lincoln: It drives us nuts.

Zion: Took some time to think about it.

Lincoln: It drives you and I nuts.

It’s so crazy to think, we’ve been into some homes where you’re like, this is a $7 million home and they put in cheap cabinets.

And our minds are like, how do they get away with this type of thing?

And so for us, I think that as a company, we really pride ourselves on the artistry of it all because we have really good in-house carpenters.

When we put in these custom cabinets, it’s a piece of art for us.

It’s a piece of, almost like a custom piece of furniture for us.

This is not a bunch of cheap plywood that we’re throwing together and slapping on something and being like, yeah, it’s good enough.

So when it comes to the custom stuff, to me, it’s a piece of art and there’s nothing wrong with doing lower end cabinets because we do that all the time as well and we can make them look beautiful.

But there is a difference between custom and an RTA cabinet for sure.

Zion: Yeah, something that’s well-designed and well thought out makes a huge difference.

Lincoln: And so would you recommend putting custom cabinetry into a basic track home?

Zion: You can, yeah, absolutely.

It depends on your price range and what your objective is.

It’s not wrong to put in something super nice that you’re gonna love to live in and touch.

Lincoln: Yeah, and you’ve done that in your home.

Zion: Yeah.

Lincoln: I love that.

Something that we do as a company that I think is pretty cool and creative is we can sometimes combine, so we can do a more affordable line, but then add a custom feature to it or add like a custom island to it.

So it makes it, we almost combine the two so that we can keep the budget at a minimal cost and yet still get that custom vibe.

And I love how we do that, it’s pretty cool.

Zion: Yeah, and that requires a better set of skilled carpentry to tie those things together.

Lincoln:Yeah, and I love how we’ll put end panels on certain things to make it look more built-in.

There’s certain little tricks that we do.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between custom cabinets and stock cabinets?2026-04-22T08:32:44-07:00

Custom cabinets are built to your exact dimensions and specifications, while stock cabinets come in preset sizes from a factory. Stock cabinets are available in limited widths, heights, and finishes, which means fillers and compromises are often needed to make them fit your space. Custom cabinets maximize every inch of available storage, allow unique configurations, and offer unlimited material and finish options. Kingdom & Co. designs and installs fully custom cabinetry that fits your kitchen perfectly and reflects your personal style.

What are the benefits of custom kitchen cabinetry?2026-04-22T08:33:06-07:00

Custom cabinetry offers superior fit, premium materials, personalized storage solutions, and a finished look that transforms a kitchen. Homeowners who invest in custom cabinets gain features like soft-close drawers, pull-out organizers, integrated lighting, and finishes matched to their exact design palette. Custom builds also use higher-grade plywood and hardwoods that outlast the particleboard found in most stock and semi-custom options. Kingdom & Co. partners with skilled cabinetmakers to deliver kitchen cabinetry that is both beautiful and built to last.

What is the difference between inset and overlay cabinet doors?2026-04-22T08:33:27-07:00

Inset doors sit flush within the cabinet frame, while overlay doors cover the frame and sit on top of it. Inset cabinetry requires more precise craftsmanship because the door must align perfectly within the frame opening with consistent reveal lines on all sides. Full overlay doors are more forgiving to install and create a sleek, modern appearance with minimal visible frame. Kingdom & Co. offers both inset and full overlay styles, helping clients choose the option that best complements their kitchen design.

How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost?2026-04-22T08:33:47-07:00

Custom kitchen cabinets typically range from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot, depending on materials, finish, and complexity. Factors that influence cost include wood species, door style (inset vs. overlay), interior accessories, paint or stain finish, and hardware selection. A standard kitchen with 25 to 30 linear feet of cabinetry might run between $15,000 and $35,000 for a fully custom build. Kingdom & Co. provides detailed cabinetry estimates as part of our design-build proposals so there are no surprises during your kitchen project.

Which luxury cabinet features are worth the investment?2026-04-22T08:34:05-07:00

Soft-close hinges, dovetail drawer boxes, pull-out shelving, and custom interior organizers are the features that add the most daily value. Homeowners also find that under-cabinet lighting, integrated charging stations, and appliance garages significantly improve how a kitchen functions. Investing in quality hardware and durable finishes ensures your cabinets look and perform well for decades rather than years. Kingdom & Co. specifies luxury cabinet features that balance everyday functionality with long-term durability in every kitchen we design.
