A general contractor manages the construction phase of a project, typically working from architectural plans created by a separate firm. A design-build firm integrates design and construction under one contract, with internal coordination between designers and builders. A true design-build firm has interior designers on staff (not as outside consultants) and at least some self-performing construction crews. Some firms market themselves as design-build but operate functionally as general contractors who outsource design.
