A self-supporting balcony (also called a cantilever balcony) is an outdoor platform that extends from a building without columns or posts underneath. Instead of wood framing, the structure relies on steel or wrought iron engineering anchored into the building’s frame. This type of balcony requires structural analysis to determine load capacity, drainage and material tolerances. In the Santa Barbara Estate, Kingdom & Co. spent two to three months engineering a self-supporting wrought iron balcony with tile on both the top walking surface and the visible underside, solid wrought iron pickets and an integrated drain system to prevent water from entering the home.
