A chamfered column is a structural or decorative column where the sharp edges have been cut at an angle, creating a beveled or angled face along the corners. This detail softens the column’s appearance and adds visual depth without changing its structural function. Chamfered columns are commonly used in Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial and Craftsman-style homes for covered patios, trellis structures, porticos and interior archways. In the Santa Barbara Estate, Kingdom & Co. used chamfered columns throughout the outdoor trellis structure in the backyard entertainment area, paired with wood beams and growing vines to create a shaded entertaining space that is consistent with the home’s Spanish Colonial architectural style.
