Choosing the right location for an outdoor fireplace depends on sightlines from the home, prevailing wind direction, proximity to seating areas and how the fireplace relates to the overall landscape design. The fireplace should feel anchored in the space rather than placed arbitrarily. One effective technique is building a full-scale mock-up out of wood or cardboard and physically moving it around the yard to test different positions before committing to construction. In the Santa Barbara Estate, the owner could not decide on the exact position for the outdoor fireplace. Kingdom & Co. built a full-scale wood mock-up and had a crew move it around the yard until the owner chose the final spot. The finished fireplace features real wood storage behind sealed steel doors designed to keep out insects and wildlife.
